Top 10 Worst Hit Songs of 2020

Well, here it is. My first completely negative post. I do not like to think about it, but I want to point out this year's bad songs because I like attention. And this was an above-average year for pop music. So this list is coming from the 100 songs that made Billboard's 2020 Year-end list.

Dishonorable Mentions:

One Margarita by Luke Bryan (#70)-  If this song was performed by Jimmy Buffet, it would be a chill party song about drinking. But with Luke Bryan, it sounds fake and unconvincing, like most songs by Luke Bryan.

Savage Love (Laxed- Siren Beat) by Jason Derulo and Jawsh 685 (#35)- This song makes me mad at Derulo. He stole some unknown producer's beat and referring to it as "going rogue." And I don't know why he stole it. The beat is terrible.

Stuck With U by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber (#80)- Let's profit off the pandemic by telling other people to donate by buying this song. And let's make it as lame as possible.

Juicy by Doja Cat feat. Tyga (#87)- Lazy R&B/rap song about sex. Doja says "back" too many times in the chorus. Listen to the Biggie song "Juicy" instead.

Intentions by Justin Bieber feat. Quavo (#17)- This is boring. Good thing Justin's pop music career is almost over.

Now for the list proper:

10. Popstar by DJ Khaled feat. Drake (#66)
Drake is still here and is still mostly underwhelming. I like the guy he can make some good songs when he tries. Look at "Laugh Now, Cry Later." He just likes to slack off at his job a lot. The public does not penalize him enough for his laziness. I wish this song was lazy. He is trying really hard. Too bad he is trying to be a dick. It kind of goes with the aesthetic of a pop star, but it is still very annoying. He talks about his expensive stuff because there aren't enough rap songs that do that. Then he talks about how his manager is Scooter Braun, the guy that bought the masters to Taylor Swift's first six albums and refused to let her use her own music. This could be a lot more interesting if they went over-the-top to make Drake look like a total villain, but Drake does the same monotone rapping he always does and the beat is a generic trap beat, even though it is one of the few beats that Khaled has actually made.

9. Memories by Maroon 5 (#8)
Maroon 5 is still around. They have been performing hits since 2004. That's astounding. I looked at the Year-end list for 2004 and no one else from that year still charts regularly. However, the quality has dipped since that time. The band has not made anything "good" in over a decade and has not made anything "interesting" in over five years. They know how to work the system to make a song safe enough that it gets regular radio play and is loved by middle-aged moms everywhere. This song is a boring song with not much to say about it.

8. Yummy by Justin Bieber (#58)
This ridiculous song is about how yummy his wife's lady parts are. There was no way this was missing this list. I will give him credit. He tries to go over-the-top. The concept is just way too stupid to be good by anyone. The production is not noticeable and Bieber does not have the presence or personality for all the attention to be on him. Now his pop career is in dire straits. The album underperformed due to a lack of interesting songs. He is releasing singles to get his fans to forget about the last album like Eminem did with Kamikaze a couple years ago. But I think it is too late for him. Being obnoxious in 2010 didn't kill his career. And being a felon in 2013 didn't kill it either. But being boring will kill his career in 2020.

7. We Paid by Lil Baby and 42 Dugg (#57)
42 Dugg has no future in rap. This song is on the list mainly because of him. He doesn't mumble his bars like many rappers do, but I still do not know what he is saying. It is a weird mix of Southern hip-hop accent, even though he is from Detroit. I checked Genius and most of Dugg's lyrics are him flexing his brand names and drinking cough syrup. Lil Baby, on the other hand, is better but still does not stand out much. This is the type of bad that is boring and played out, but hip-hop will not get past these cliches.

6. If the World Was Ending by JP Saxe feat. Julia Michaels (#56)
This song is ridiculous and the two artists have zero chemistry. Saxe is a wimpy, weak non-presence, and Julia Michaels still does not have any personality to justify her bad singing. Most of my criticism goes to the lyrics. There was a disaster, an earthquake, that recently hit where they live. For some reason, these two people's first thought is to bone their ex. Not to spend time with your family and friends, but have sex with your ex one last time. This is a very immature and unrealistic way to worry about the end of the world.

5. Party Girl by StaySolidRocky (#64)
Overall, TikTok has brought some good music to the charts. It gave Brockhampton their first (and only) taste of chart success. Sadly, it has also popularized stuff like this. This song is about a party girl that Rocky is simping over. He has a terrible rap voice. He tries to seem laid back and relaxed, but it is very unconvincing. The lyrics make him sound very delusional. He says he is in love with her, but it appears the poor girl has zero interest in him. Yet he still acts like he still has a chance with her. The beat is too minimalistic. If you are writing a song about a party girl, make it sound like something she can party to.

4. Falling by Trevor Daniel (#22)
As annoying as rappers are at talking about the expensive stuff they own, emo rap is still much worse. It is all the whining that emo music has always had without any of the rage or anger it had when I was in middle school. Trevor here has gone through a breakup and he wants you to know how sad he is. Too bad he still needs to use trap beats that add nothing to the song. This is just a boring, basic song that makes me grateful musicians do not want to make songs over three minutes long anymore.

3. Hard To Forget by Sam Hunt (#69)
This is here mostly because of that sample. Country music can stop stealing ideas for hip-hop now. But there is still a market of rap fans who are afraid of black people, so they come to country music to fix it all. It shows that country music has no clue what it is doing. The sample just distracts from the rest of the song it was badly pasted into. Meanwhile, Sam Hunt uses his modern country production (i.e. no real instruments) to tell his ex off/proclaim his love to her and sounds pathetic in a way that does not match the production at all.

2. Toosie Slide by Drake (#32)
Like I said earlier, Drake can do so much better, but he knows his fans will stream to death anything his name is slapped on. This is a boring dance song no one can actually dance to. He does not even sound interested. He just wanted to make money off TikTok and knew he could get it off a dance challenge. He sounds disinterested and really cares about that paycheck.

Other  bad songs that charted:
  • Bang! by AJR
  • Ice Cream by Blackpink feat. Selena Gomez
  • Gooba by 6ix9ine
  • Trollz by 6ix9ine feat. Nicki Minaj
  • Money Over Fallouts by Torey Lanez
  • Put Your Records On by Ritt Momney
Now for Number One.

1. hot girl bummer by blackbear (#26)
This guy is immature and whiny. It is all spite without any proof that he should be spiteful. Normally, the artist will talk about how the world has wronged him and justify this anger. Not for blackbear. He is just going to tell everyone to f*** off and take emotional advantage of an emo girl. And with a lot of modern emo, he does not want to show any actual rage or anger, just be pissed at everything without any theatrics. Can we let him become irrelevant? We can find a better one-dimensional emo whiner than this guy.

Top 10 One Hit Wonders for Funk, Soul, and R&B

Recently (By recently, I mean three months ago), I listened to SiriusXM’s list of the top 100 one-hit wonders, and it made me realize how bad some one-hit wonders are. Memorable is not always the same as good. At the time, I made my own list of the top one-hit wonders. One hundred songs sounded hard, so I decided to divide it into 10 genres with 10 songs each plus some honorable mentions. Over the course of two weeks, I made my list and have updated multiple times after I remember the song exists. If there is more interest in one-hit wonders, check out YouTuber Todd in the Shadows’ series One-Hit Wonderland . Qualifications: Crack the US Billboard Top 40 one time. There are some exceptions if the song is well-remembered. We will allow some two-hit wonders if the second hit did not peak higher than 20 and has been forgotten. The first list I made was the hardest. This was originally supposed to be just a list of R&B songs, but R&B is not a genre with many one-hit wonde...

Worst Hit Songs of 2024

2024: the year pop music came back to life. This was a solid year for the genre, so this list was hard to make. There are more "dislikes" than true "hates." Yet there are still some "hates" and I found a new list this year. As I write this, Billboard has not released its year-end list, so I paid a couple bucks to a chart predictor on Twitter, Talk of the Charts, to use their list. With this list, I actually get 100 new songs. Billboard's year-end is 25% Christmas songs and music from last year that stayed on the chart for a long time. So this list goes up to 118. Now that that's settled. let's start with the dishonorable mentions. FE!N by Travis Scott feat. Playboi Carti (#97): This unessential song has an obnoxious repetition of "fiend," a synth line that sounds offkey, and a pair of boring verses from Travis and Carti, where the latter sounds awful. act ii: date @8 (Remix) by 4Batz feat. Drake (#80): I hate everything that 4B...

Critic's Circle: 1992

1992. I was born this year in a hospital in Connecticut. This year is significant to me for that reason and that reason alone. I also recently found a website that lists the most critically acclaimed songs by year. A Swedish statistician combed through many top 10 song lists compiled by Rolling Stone, NME, and other music publications from all over the world. With this data, he found the most acclaimed songs and separated them by genre, year, and country. For fun, I decided to see what the most critically-loved songs of my birth year were, listen to the top 100, and rank my favorites.       To see the list and complain about my choices click here . Honorable Mentions: Sheela-na-gig by PJ Harvey (#23): For those who don't know, a sheela-na-gig is a crude carving of a woman exposing her lady parts found in Europe in the 11th century. In the song, PJ Harvey uses her body to get the attention of a man. In return, she gets slut shamed by the man...
