The Music Scalpel

As terrible as 2020 was as a year, we had some good popular music. Let's go over the best. We are still using Billboard's year-end song list for reference. Honorable Mentions: Dynamite by BTS (#38)- I am not a big fan of this group, but they made a fun, catchy pop song that is in a language I can understand. This is what I want from pop music. Mood by 24kGoldn feat. ian diorr (#47)- Another catchy pop song. Golden has a lot of promise and I would like to see where he goes in his career. The lyrics, however, could be much better. Still a fun track. Supalonely by Benee feat. Gus Dapperton (#84)- Even though I would have preferred "Backyard Boy" by Claire Rosinkranz, TikTok made this song a hit. Benee talks about how lonely and sad she is with bright and happy production. This disconnect works way better than it should. Sunday Best by Surfaces (#61)- If you are a snobby music critic, this is the "controversial" pick. I understand that critics hate the flat deli...

Well, here it is. My first completely negative post. I do not like to think about it, but I want to point out this year's bad songs because I like attention. And this was an above-average year for pop music. So this list is coming from the 100 songs that made Billboard's 2020 Year-end list. Dishonorable Mentions: One Margarita by Luke Bryan (#70)-  If this song was performed by Jimmy Buffet, it would be a chill party song about drinking. But with Luke Bryan, it sounds fake and unconvincing, like most songs by Luke Bryan. Savage Love (Laxed- Siren Beat) by Jason Derulo and Jawsh 685 (#35)- This song makes me mad at Derulo. He stole some unknown producer's beat and referring to it as "going rogue." And I don't know why he stole it. The beat is terrible. Stuck With U by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber (#80)- Let's profit off the pandemic by telling other people to donate by buying this song. And let's make it as lame as possible.
